Can a Fuel Pump Cause Overheating?

A problematic Fuel Pump can lead to overheating of the engine, though it is not the most ordinary cause. The main responsibility of the Fuel Pump is to transfer fuel from the tank to the engine with proper pressure, usually in the range of 30 to 80 psi. The failure of this pump will restrict fuel circulation and send the signal for running of the engine lean-that is, there is not enough fuel for proper combustion. Running lean overheats the engine internally due to lack of fuel to cool the combustion chambers and could result in overheating. Sometimes, a Fuel Pump itself may overheat because of constant stress. In such a situation, when the pump needs to work harder to push fuel through clogged fuel filters or restricted fuel lines, it overheats. While fuel pumps are designed to be cooled by the fuel passing through them, if the pump is under constant strain-or the fuel level becomes too low-it cannot dissipate heat. Running a car on less than a quarter tank of fuel on a consistent basis can reduce the life of the pump as much as 25%, because the pump runs hotter and, therefore, will wear out faster.

A practical example is found in some cars whose fuel pressure is low due to a failing Fuel Pump. In 2019 alone, several models from different manufacturers had to be recalled due to defective Fuel Pumps that were causing stalling and overheating. Some said that certain drivers drove around with low fuel pressure continuously until their engines overheated and had to be replaced at repairs costing anywhere from $500 to $1,500, depending on how extensively they had been damaged.

Routine replacements, such as fuel filters and keeping the fuel tank sufficiently full of gasoline, will prevent overheating of the Fuel Pump and accordingly avoid overheating of the engine. Occasional inspection of the Fuel Pump and fuel lines can provide the needed opportunity for repairs before severe damage could take place in the engine.

As Carroll Shelby, one of the greatest automotive experts, said, “A car is only as good as its weakest link.” A malfunctioning Fuel Pump can become that weak link in no time and invite big other problems like overheating of the engine.
